Six messengers. Eight criteria. Every score sourced. And yes, we scored ourselves too.

[Z-TEXT](https://z-text.com/?ref=z-text.org) is a private messenger on the [BitcoinZ blockchain](https://getbtcz.com/?ref=z-text.org) with no phone number, no email and no SIM. We built a public scorecard of blockchain messengers to answer one question honestly: which one actually protects your privacy best?

We rated six apps on eight criteria, from 0 to 5\. Signal is included as the non-blockchain baseline everyone knows. Z-TEXT is in the list, and Z-TEXT does not come first.

Mini-resume

This scorecard rates ADAMANT, Session, Status, Secure Legion, Z-TEXT and Signal on 8 criteria, split into Technology (what the app does, /30) and Verifiability (can outsiders check it, /10). Z-TEXT scores highest on Technology (26/30) and lowest on Verifiability (2/10), for a total of 28/40\. Session leads the total with 31/40.

## ❓ 1\. Which blockchain messaging apps are on the market in 2026?

The blockchain messaging app market splits into two families.

**On-chain messengers** store each encrypted message on a blockchain. Z-TEXT (BitcoinZ) and ADAMANT (its own chain) work this way. ADAMANT [writes every message as a blockchain transaction](https://news.adamant.im/how-decentralized-blockchain-messenger-works-b9932834a639?ref=z-text.org).

**Blockchain-linked messengers** use a blockchain for identity, a wallet or a node network, but do not keep messages on a ledger. Session runs on the Session Network, Status pairs messaging with an Ethereum wallet, and Secure Legion uses a seed-based identity and sends messages [peer-to-peer over Tor](https://github.com/Secure-Legion/android?ref=z-text.org).

Also on the market, not scored here: ZChat (Zcash memos), OpenChat (Internet Computer), BChat (Beldex) and XMTP-based wallet chat apps.

Mini-resume

In 2026 the blockchain messaging app market has two families: on-chain messengers that store encrypted messages on a blockchain (Z-TEXT, ADAMANT, ZChat) and blockchain-linked messengers that use a chain for identity or networking (Session, Status, Secure Legion, BChat, XMTP apps).

## ❓ 2\. How were these blockchain messengers evaluated?

Each app gets 0 to 5 on each criterion. 0 means no. 1 means announced but not shipped. 2 to 3 means partial. 4 means yes, with a limit. 5 means yes, shipped and documented.

Criteria 1 to 6 measure **Technology**: what the app does for your privacy. Criteria 7 and 8 measure **Verifiability**: whether outsiders can check those claims. The total is out of 40\. Every score links to a public source.

Mini-resume

Scale: 0 to 5 per criterion, 8 criteria, 40 points maximum. Technology (criteria 1 to 6, /30) measures what the app does; Verifiability (criteria 7 and 8, /10) measures whether outsiders can check it. Every score is backed by a public source.

## ❓ 3\. Which blockchain messenger needs no phone number?

Criterion 1 — No phone number

**ADAMANT — 5/5**
No phone, email or social account ([whitepaper](https://adamant.im/whitepaper/adamant-whitepaper-en.pdf?ref=z-text.org)).

**Session — 5/5**
Random Account ID backed by a Recovery Password ([Session docs](https://docs.getsession.org/session-network/session-protocol/account-restoration?ref=z-text.org)).

**Status — 5/5**
Identity from a recovery phrase, no phone number ([Status](https://our.status.im/breaking-down-the-private-secure-messenger/?ref=z-text.org)).

**Secure Legion — 5/5**
Identity is a Tor .onion address made from a seed ([GitHub](https://github.com/Secure-Legion/android?ref=z-text.org)).

**Z-TEXT — 5/5**
Identity is a 24-word seed made on your phone ([Z-TEXT docs](https://z-text.com/docs/security?ref=z-text.org)).

**Signal — 1/5**
Usernames hide your number, but [a phone number is still needed to register](https://signal.org/blog/phone-number-privacy-usernames/?ref=z-text.org).

Mini-resume

Every blockchain messenger in this scorecard works without a phone number (5/5). Signal still requires a phone number to register (1/5), even though usernames can hide it from contacts.

## ❓ 4\. Can you recover your messages on a new phone?

Criterion 2 — Message recovery on a new phone

**ADAMANT — 5/5**
Message history is on-chain and readable from any device ([whitepaper](https://adamant.im/whitepaper/adamant-whitepaper-en.pdf?ref=z-text.org)).

**Session — 2/5**
The account comes back, but the network keeps messages [about 14 days](https://discuss.privacyguides.net/t/a-question-about-session-messaging-app/29955?ref=z-text.org).

**Status — 2/5**
Store nodes keep [about 30 days of data](https://discuss.status.app/t/how-persistent-is-messages-in-status-im-mobile-app/1192?ref=z-text.org).

**Secure Legion — 0/5**
Backup and restore of message history is [not available yet](https://github.com/Secure-Legion/android?ref=z-text.org).

**Z-TEXT — 5/5**
24 words restore messages, contacts, passwords and wallet from the BitcoinZ blockchain ([Z-TEXT docs](https://z-text.com/docs/security?ref=z-text.org)).

**Signal — 4/5**
Opt-in secure backups since 2025 ([Signal blog](https://signal.org/blog/?ref=z-text.org)).

Mini-resume

On-chain messengers win on recovery: ADAMANT and Z-TEXT both score 5/5 because messages live on the blockchain. Signal scores 4/5 with opt-in backups. Session and Status keep only recent messages on their networks (2/5). Secure Legion has no restore yet (0/5).

## ❓ 5\. How do they rate on end-to-end encrypted chat?

End-to-end encryption means only the sender and the recipient can read a message. Forward secrecy means each message gets a fresh key, so a stolen key cannot unlock old messages. In this scorecard, 5/5 needs documented forward secrecy.

Criterion 3 — End-to-end encryption

**ADAMANT — 4/5**
Curve25519 + XSalsa20-Poly1305, keys derived from the account ([ADAMANT](https://news.adamant.im/encryption-overview-in-adamant-messenger-878ecec1ff78?ref=z-text.org)).

**Session — 4/5**
End-to-end encrypted; forward secrecy is planned for Protocol v2 ([Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Session%5F%28software%29?ref=z-text.org)).

**Status — 5/5**
X3DH + Double Ratchet on all 1:1 chats by default ([Status](https://our.status.im/breaking-down-the-private-secure-messenger/?ref=z-text.org)).

**Secure Legion — 4/5**
XChaCha20-Poly1305 with a hybrid key exchange; forward secrecy not documented ([GitHub](https://github.com/Secure-Legion/android?ref=z-text.org)).

**Z-TEXT — 4/5**
Three layers: BitcoinZ Sapling zk-SNARKs, X25519 + AES-256-GCM, and ML-KEM-768\. One key per contact pair, rebuilt from your seed ([Z-TEXT docs](https://z-text.com/docs/security?ref=z-text.org)).

**Signal — 5/5**
Double Ratchet plus the post-quantum SPQR ratchet ([Schneier on Security](https://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2025/10/signals-post-quantum-cryptographic-implementation.html?ref=z-text.org)).

Z-TEXT makes a deliberate trade-off. Forward secrecy and seed recovery pull in opposite directions: if keys change with every message, a seed cannot rebuild them. Z-TEXT chose recovery. Status chose forward secrecy and, as its own tech page explains, a recovered account cannot read old messages from existing contacts.

Mini-resume

Status and Signal score 5/5 thanks to Double Ratchet forward secrecy. ADAMANT, Session, Secure Legion and Z-TEXT score 4/5\. Z-TEXT wraps every message in three layers (zk-SNARKs, X25519 + AES-256-GCM, ML-KEM-768) but uses one key per contact pair so the 24-word seed can restore history.

## ❓ 6\. Is a blockchain messenger really decentralized?

Criterion 4 — Decentralization

**ADAMANT — 5/5**
Runs its own blockchain node network ([ADAMANT](https://news.adamant.im/how-decentralized-blockchain-messenger-works-b9932834a639?ref=z-text.org)).

**Session — 5/5**
Runs on the Session Network of community nodes ([Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Session%5F%28software%29?ref=z-text.org)).

**Status — 4/5**
Peer-to-peer Waku network; store nodes keep recent history ([Status forum](https://discuss.status.app/t/how-persistent-is-messages-in-status-im-mobile-app/1192?ref=z-text.org)).

**Secure Legion — 4/5**
Peer-to-peer over Tor, no company-owned servers ([GitHub](https://github.com/Secure-Legion/android?ref=z-text.org)).

**Z-TEXT — 4/5**
Messages live on the BitcoinZ blockchain; the app syncs through a lightwalletd server and checks a licence server ([Z-TEXT docs](https://z-text.com/docs/tor?ref=z-text.org)).

**Signal — 1/5**
Central servers run by the Signal Foundation.

Mini-resume

ADAMANT and Session score 5/5 on decentralization. Status, Secure Legion and Z-TEXT score 4/5: Z-TEXT stores messages on the BitcoinZ blockchain but still syncs through a lightwalletd server. Signal is centralized (1/5).

## ❓ 7\. How do they rate on privacy-preserving messaging?

Metadata is the data about your messages: who talks to whom, when, and from where. Encryption hides the words. Metadata privacy hides the relationship.

Criterion 5 — Metadata privacy

**ADAMANT — 2/5**
Messages are encrypted, but every transaction is public, so sender and recipient addresses are visible on-chain ([ADAMANT](https://news.adamant.im/how-decentralized-blockchain-messenger-works-b9932834a639?ref=z-text.org)).

**Session — 5/5**
Onion routing; the privacy policy says IP addresses are not logged ([Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Session%5F%28software%29?ref=z-text.org)).

**Status — 3/5**
Status aims for no metadata leakage over its peer-to-peer relay; a goal, not a proof ([Status](https://our.status.im/breaking-down-the-private-secure-messenger/?ref=z-text.org)).

**Secure Legion — 4/5**
All traffic over Tor, but an "online" heartbeat is sent to contacts ([GitHub](https://github.com/Secure-Legion/android?ref=z-text.org)).

**Z-TEXT — 4/5**
zk-SNARKs hide sender, recipient and content on the blockchain. Tor is built in but off until you switch it on ([Z-TEXT docs](https://z-text.com/docs/tor?ref=z-text.org)).

**Signal — 3/5**
Sealed sender hides who sent a message, but accounts are tied to phone numbers on central servers.

Mini-resume

Session leads privacy-preserving messaging (5/5) with onion routing. Z-TEXT (4/5) hides sender, recipient and content on-chain with zk-SNARKs, the same privacy technology as Zcash; Tor is optional. ADAMANT scores 2/5 because sender and recipient addresses are public on its blockchain.

## ❓ 8\. Which blockchain messengers are quantum-resistant?

Quantum-resistant means using encryption designed to survive future quantum computers. The threat is "harvest now, decrypt later": recording messages today to break them later.

Criterion 6 — Post-quantum protection

**ADAMANT — 0/5**
Classical cryptography only ([ADAMANT](https://news.adamant.im/encryption-overview-in-adamant-messenger-878ecec1ff78?ref=z-text.org)).

**Session — 1/5**
ML-KEM announced for Protocol v2; [not quantum-resistant today](https://cointelegraph.com/explained/the-future-of-secure-messaging-why-decentralization-matters-more-than-ever?ref=z-text.org).

**Status — 0/5**
No post-quantum key exchange found.

**Secure Legion — 4/5**
Hybrid X25519 + ML-KEM-1024 key exchange, in beta ([GitHub](https://github.com/Secure-Legion/android?ref=z-text.org)).

**Z-TEXT — 4/5**
Hybrid X25519 + ML-KEM-768 on every contact handshake since version 3.7.0; signatures still Ed25519 ([Z-TEXT docs](https://z-text.com/docs/security?ref=z-text.org)).

**Signal — 5/5**
Post-quantum key exchange plus the SPQR ratchet ([Schneier on Security](https://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2025/10/signals-post-quantum-cryptographic-implementation.html?ref=z-text.org)).

Mini-resume

Signal leads post-quantum protection (5/5). Z-TEXT and Secure Legion score 4/5 with hybrid ML-KEM key exchange. Session has announced ML-KEM but not shipped it (1/5). ADAMANT and Status use classical cryptography only (0/5).

## ❓ 9\. Are they open source and independently audited?

This is Verifiability: can outsiders check the claims above?

Criterion 7 — Open source

**ADAMANT — 5/5**
Open source code ([whitepaper](https://adamant.im/whitepaper/adamant-whitepaper-en.pdf?ref=z-text.org)).

**Session — 5/5**
Open source clients ([Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Session%5F%28software%29?ref=z-text.org)).

**Status — 5/5**
Open source app and protocol.

**Secure Legion — 2/5**
Source-available under a non-commercial licence ([GitHub](https://github.com/Secure-Legion/android?ref=z-text.org)).

**Z-TEXT — 1/5**
The [BitcoinZ](https://getbtcz.com/?ref=z-text.org) blockchain is open source; the Z-TEXT app is not.

**Signal — 5/5**
Open source client, server and library.

Criterion 8 — Independent audit

**ADAMANT — 2/5**
Internal audit plus a public bounty contest; says an independent audit followed, report not public ([ADAMANT](https://adamant.im/1securitycontest/?ref=z-text.org)).

**Session — 4/5**
Independent review by Quarkslab in 2021 ([Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Session%5F%28software%29?ref=z-text.org)).

**Status — 3/5**
Trail of Bits audit of the mobile app, November 2019 ([Status](https://our.status.im/status-mobile-app-security-audit-complete-ahead-of-v1-launch/?ref=z-text.org)).

**Secure Legion — 0/5**
No audit yet; planned before 1.0 ([GitHub](https://github.com/Secure-Legion/android?ref=z-text.org)).

**Z-TEXT — 1/5**
No independent audit yet. An active [bug bounty](https://z-text.com/bug-bounty?ref=z-text.org) pays researchers in ZEC.

**Signal — 5/5**
Many independent and academic analyses ([Schneier on Security](https://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2025/10/signals-post-quantum-cryptographic-implementation.html?ref=z-text.org)).

Mini-resume

Signal leads Verifiability (10/10), followed by Session (9/10). Z-TEXT and Secure Legion score lowest (2/10). Z-TEXT has no independent audit and a closed app, with only the BitcoinZ blockchain open source and a ZEC bug bounty running.

## ❓ 10\. Isn't a blockchain public?

Yes. A blockchain is a public record that never forgets. That is exactly why the privacy layer matters.

On ADAMANT, messages are encrypted, but [all transactions are available to everyone](https://news.adamant.im/how-decentralized-blockchain-messenger-works-b9932834a639?ref=z-text.org), so the sender and recipient addresses are visible. On Z-TEXT, each message is a shielded BitcoinZ transaction: zk-SNARKs, zero-knowledge proofs, let the network verify a transaction without seeing who sent it, who received it or what it said ([Z-TEXT docs](https://z-text.com/docs/security?ref=z-text.org)).

Mini-resume

A blockchain is public and permanent. A blockchain messenger is only private if the transactions themselves are shielded. Z-TEXT uses zk-SNARKs to hide sender, recipient and content on the BitcoinZ blockchain, running since September 10, 2017.

## ❓ 11\. How does Z-TEXT score?

Z-TEXT — 28/40

**Technology — 26/30 — 1st**
No phone 5 · recovery 5 · encryption 4 · decentralization 4 · metadata 4 · post-quantum 4

**Verifiability — 2/10 — last**
Open source 1 · independent audit 1

Z-TEXT has the strongest technology in this scorecard. It is also the least verifiable. Both weak points are decisions, not missing features: publishing the protocol and paying for an independent audit would move Z-TEXT from 28 to 33, the top of the table.

Mini-resume

Z-TEXT scores 28/40: first on Technology (26/30) and last on Verifiability (2/10). An open protocol specification (+2) and an independent audit (+3) would raise Z-TEXT to 33/40.

## ❓ 12\. Which blockchain company offers the best private messaging app?

Final ranking — total /40 (Technology + Verifiability)

**Session — 31**
22 + 9

**Signal (baseline) — 29**
19 + 10

**ADAMANT — 28**
21 + 7

**Z-TEXT — 28**
26 + 2

**Status — 27**
19 + 8

**Secure Legion — 23**
21 + 2

Session wins the total today. Z-TEXT wins the technology. If you want the most verified app right now, pick Session or Signal. If you want no phone number, messages that survive a lost phone and zk-SNARKs privacy on-chain, pick Z-TEXT, and hold us to the audit.

Z-TEXT leads on technology. Now we have to prove it.

Mini-resume

Final ranking: Session 31, Signal 29, ADAMANT 28, Z-TEXT 28, Status 27, Secure Legion 23\. Session offers the best overall private messaging app among blockchain messengers today; Z-TEXT has the best technology score.

No phone. No email. No SIM. Zero metadata. Z-TEXT zk-SNARKs privacy.
