Encryption locks the letter. But the envelope still talks: who wrote to whom, when, and how often. On Global Encryption Day, here is why the envelope matters, and how Z-TEXT hides it.

Z-TEXT is a privacy messenger built on the BitcoinZ blockchain. Z-TEXT needs no phone number, no email and no SIM. On Wednesday, October 21, 2026, people around the world mark Global Encryption Day. This post explains what encryption protects, what it leaves exposed, and what Z-TEXT does about the gap.

In short

Global Encryption Day is an online event on October 21, 2026, hosted by the Global Encryption Coalition to defend end-to-end encryption. End-to-end encryption protects message content, the letter. Metadata, the envelope, can still show who talks to whom. Z-TEXT encrypts the letter with AES-256-GCM and uses zk-SNARKs to hide the sender and the recipient on the BitcoinZ blockchain. Z-TEXT does not hide network data like your IP address from the node you connect to, unless you add Tor.

## ❓ What about quantum computers?

Some encrypted data is not stolen to be read today. It is stored, to be read later.

The name for this is "harvest now, decrypt later": collect encrypted data today, and wait for a quantum computer strong enough to break today's key exchange. (Source: [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harvest%5Fnow,%5Fdecrypt%5Flater?ref=z-text.org))

For a blockchain messenger, this matters even more. Z-TEXT messages live on the BitcoinZ blockchain, permanently. Permanent means anyone can keep a copy.

So Z-TEXT uses a quantum-resistant key exchange: ML-KEM-768\. ML-KEM is the post-quantum standard NIST published as FIPS 203 in August 2024\. (Source: [NIST FIPS 203](https://csrc.nist.gov/pubs/fips/203/final?ref=z-text.org))

Honest limit

Z-TEXT signatures are still classical (Ed25519). The Z-TEXT app has not been independently audited yet. Quantum-resistant does not mean quantum-proof.

## ❓ 1\. What is Global Encryption Day?

Global Encryption Day is a yearly day to celebrate and defend strong encryption.

In 2026, it takes place online on Wednesday, October 21\. The Global Encryption Coalition hosts it, with the Internet Society. Anyone can register for the online event. (Source: [Internet Society](https://www.internetsociety.org/events/global-encryption-day-2026/?ref=z-text.org))

The organisers say governments around the world keep attacking end-to-end encryption, and that weakening everyone's digital safety is not the answer.

The coalition's members include Signal, Proton, Tutanota, Mozilla and Electric Coin Co., the company behind Zcash. (Source: [Global Encryption Coalition](https://www.globalencryption.org/about/members/?ref=z-text.org))

Global Encryption Day 2026 takes place online on Wednesday, October 21\. The Global Encryption Coalition hosts it with the Internet Society, to defend end-to-end encryption against government attempts to weaken it.

## ❓ 2\. What does encryption actually protect?

End-to-end encryption scrambles a message on your device. Only the recipient's device can unscramble it.

Think of a sealed letter. Nobody on the way can read what's inside.

That's huge. It's why encryption deserves a day of its own.

But a sealed letter still travels in an envelope.

Mini-resume

End-to-end encryption protects the content of a message, like a sealed letter. Only the recipient can read it. End-to-end encryption alone does not hide the envelope around the message.

## ❓ 3\. What is metadata?

Metadata is data about a message, not the message itself.

Who sent it. Who received it. When. How often. From where.

That's the envelope. And most messengers can't seal the envelope, because their servers need it to deliver your message.

Many apps also tie the envelope to your phone number. Signal and WhatsApp both need one to sign up.

Mini-resume

Metadata is the envelope around a message: who sent it, who received it, when, how often and from where. Encryption locks the content, but metadata can stay visible, and many messengers tie it to a phone number.

## ❓ 4\. Why does the envelope matter so much?

In April 2014, former NSA and CIA director Michael Hayden debated law professor David Cole at Johns Hopkins University.

Hayden agreed that metadata can tell a government "everything" about a target, often making the content unnecessary. Then he said: "We kill people based on metadata." (Source: [ABC News](https://abcnews.go.com/blogs/headlines/2014/05/ex-nsa-chief-we-kill-people-based-on-metadata?ref=z-text.org))

To be fair to Hayden, he added that this was not what the NSA did with Americans' phone records. David Cole wrote that the remark showed how revealing metadata really is. (Source: [Just Security](https://www.justsecurity.org/10311/michael-hayden-kill-people-based-metadata/?ref=z-text.org))

The envelope talks.

Our view: Global Encryption Day should also be a day about metadata. Locking the letter is step one. Hiding the envelope is step two.

Mini-resume

In a 2014 debate at Johns Hopkins University, former NSA and CIA director Michael Hayden agreed that metadata can reveal everything about a target and said "We kill people based on metadata." He added that this was not how the NSA used Americans' phone records. The exchange shows why metadata matters as much as content.

## ❓ 5\. How does Z-TEXT hide the envelope?

Z-TEXT sends every message as a shielded transaction on the BitcoinZ blockchain. Z-TEXT has no central message server.

Shielded transactions use zk-SNARKs. A zk-SNARK is a zero-knowledge proof: a way to prove something is true without revealing anything else. (Source: [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zero-knowledge%5Fproof?ref=z-text.org))

For Z-TEXT, that means the blockchain can check that a message transaction is valid, without showing who sent it, who received it, or the amount. (Source: [Z-TEXT security docs](https://z-text.com/docs/security?ref=z-text.org))

Z-TEXT locks the letter too. Each message is encrypted on your device with AES-256-GCM, using a key from a hybrid X25519 + ML-KEM-768 handshake. ML-KEM-768 is a quantum-resistant key exchange standard (NIST FIPS 203).

And Z-TEXT asks for no phone number, no email and no SIM. Your Z-TEXT identity is a 24-word seed phrase.

The letter and the envelope

Message content (the letter)

Typical encrypted messenger: encrypted · Z-TEXT: encrypted (AES-256-GCM, quantum-resistant key exchange)

Sender and recipient (the envelope)

Typical encrypted messenger: handled by the company's servers · Z-TEXT: hidden on-chain by zk-SNARKs

Your identity

Signal and WhatsApp: phone number · Z-TEXT: a 24-word seed, no phone, no email, no SIM

Where messages live

Typical encrypted messenger: company servers · Z-TEXT: the BitcoinZ blockchain, no central message server

Mini-resume

Z-TEXT sends each message as a shielded BitcoinZ transaction. zk-SNARKs, a type of zero-knowledge proof, hide the sender, the recipient and the amount on-chain. Z-TEXT encrypts the message itself with AES-256-GCM, using a hybrid X25519 + ML-KEM-768 key exchange, and needs no phone number, email or SIM.

## ❓ 6\. What doesn't Z-TEXT hide?

Honest limits matter more than slogans. Here they are.

- Shielding hides the sender and the recipient on the blockchain. It does not hide network data like your IP address or timing.
- Your internet provider can see that you connect to the BitcoinZ network, unless you add Tor or a VPN. Z-TEXT supports Tor.
- Your contact never sees your IP address. The message comes from the network, not from your device directly.
- Anyone with your 24-word seed can read your messages. Guard it.
- The Z-TEXT app has not been independently audited yet. A public [bug bounty](https://z-text.com/bug-bounty?ref=z-text.org) is open.

Yes, a messenger company is praising its own design here. So don't trust us. Read the threat model, including what Z-TEXT does not protect against, on the [Z-TEXT security page](https://z-text.com/docs/security?ref=z-text.org).

Mini-resume

Z-TEXT shielding hides sender and recipient on the BitcoinZ blockchain, but not network data like IP address or timing. An internet provider can see a connection to BitcoinZ unless Tor or a VPN is used. The Z-TEXT app is not independently audited yet, and a public bug bounty is open.

## ❓ 7\. What can you do on October 21?

Three small things.

1\. Join the day

Register for the online event on the [Internet Society page](https://www.internetsociety.org/events/global-encryption-day-2026/?ref=z-text.org).

2\. Check your envelope

Ask of every app you use: does it need my phone number? Who can see who I talk to?

3\. Try a sealed envelope

Z-TEXT runs on Android, macOS, Windows and Linux at [z-text.com](https://z-text.com/?ref=z-text.org). iOS is coming to the App Store. Z-TEXT is also the official BitcoinZ wallet. BitcoinZ lives at [getbtcz.com](https://getbtcz.com/?ref=z-text.org).

Mini-resume

On Global Encryption Day, October 21, 2026, people can register for the online event, check which apps tie their messages to a phone number, and try Z-TEXT, a messenger that hides sender and recipient on the BitcoinZ blockchain. Z-TEXT runs on Android, macOS, Windows and Linux.
