# LINDDUN Score: Z-TEXT vs 7 Ultra-Privacy Messengers

LINDDUN is a privacy threat model created in 2011 by researchers at KU Leuven, Belgium, now cited in the ISO 27550 privacy engineering standard. It checks seven distinct ways privacy can fail, not just "is it encrypted." Using that framework, we scored six messengers that lead on metadata protection — Briar, SimpleX, Threema, Wire, Status, and Jami — against Z-TEXT, a zk-SNARKs blockchain messenger built on BitcoinZ.

On the podium with Briar and SimpleX, Z-TEXT ties for the top spot on network-layer privacy:

🟢 Linkability — Tor-always-on by default

🟢 Identifiability — no phone, no email, no SIM

🟢 Non-repudiation — not a real threat in this architecture

🟢 Detectability — Tor-always-on covers all messaging traffic

🟢 Unawareness — threat model publicly disclosed, unlike most competitors

Two honest weaknesses:

🟡 Data Disclosure — no independent third-party audit yet, unlike SimpleX (Trail of Bits, 2022)

🟡 Non-compliance — not evaluated in this pass

## ❓ 1\. What is LINDDUN, and why does it matter for messengers?

Most messenger comparisons stop at one question: is it end-to-end encrypted? Encryption protects your message content — not the most important or dangerous part: your metadata, who you talk to, when, how often, from where.

LINDDUN closes that gap. Created in 2011 by researchers at KU Leuven's DistriNet group, it breaks privacy into seven failure modes:

• Linkability

• Identifiability

• Non-repudiation

• Detectability

• Disclosure of information

• Unawareness

• Non-compliance

It's cited in the ISO 27550 privacy engineering standard — a structured framework, not a marketing checklist.

There's no official LINDDUN certifying body. It's an open methodology anyone can self-apply — exactly what privacy researcher The Hated One did for his own [messenger privacy rankings](https://www.patreon.com/posts/160526266?ref=z-text.org).

Our scoring strictly follows LINDDUN methodology.

## ❓ 2\. How does Z-TEXT score on Linkability and Identifiability?

**Linkability** — Z-TEXT has built-in Tor routing, no external app needed. It's opt-in, like every privacy toggle in the app (post-quantum, on-chain persistence) — your choice, not forced. SimpleX's Tor is also opt-in. Briar's mesh/Bluetooth fallback leaks IP with no fix. Z-TEXT matches SimpleX, beats Briar's fallback gap.

**Identifiability** — No phone. No email. No SIM. Just a 24-word seed. Ties with Briar and SimpleX — the only apps here asking for zero identifiers at signup.

**Mini-resume:** Identifiability — top tier. Linkability — opt-in, same as SimpleX, honest about not being forced.

## ❓ 3\. How does Z-TEXT score on Detectability?

Detectability asks: can an observer tell you're using Z-TEXT at all, even without reading anything? Two angles — network traffic, and the app itself on your device.

**Network traffic** — same opt-in Tor toggle as Linkability. One difference worth noting: because it protects the whole connection, not just messaging, turning it on also hides wallet and price-check traffic at the same time. One toggle, multiple tools covered — something a single-purpose messenger can't offer, since it has nothing else to protect.

**On-device**, Z-TEXT has two extra layers none of the other six apps combine:

• Panic mode — wipes or hides data under duress

• Stealth mode — disguises the app's presence entirely

Scope note: this scoring covers messaging only. Z-TEXT's wallet, password manager, and Channels aren't part of this comparison, since the other six apps don't have them.

**Mini-resume:** Network Detectability — opt-in, same trade-off as Linkability, with the side benefit of covering wallet/price traffic too. On-device Detectability — panic + stealth mode is a genuine edge none of the other six apps match.

## ❓ 4\. What about Data Disclosure — the honest gap?

Data Disclosure asks: how secure is your data against hackers, spies, or a compromised server? This is the one category where Z-TEXT doesn't lead. Where Z-TEXT stands:

• Cryptography built on librustzcash, the same audited codebase behind Zcash — not custom, unmodified code

• No independent third-party audit of the Z-TEXT app itself, yet

• SimpleX has one: Trail of Bits, November 2022

• Briar has years of public scrutiny as an open-source, EFF-adjacent project

• Jami and Status have no confirmed audit either — removed from Privacy Guides specifically for that reason

This is a real gap, not a rounding error. Built on audited cryptography is a defensible claim. Audited as an app is a different, stronger one — and Z-TEXT can't make it yet.

**Mini-resume:** Data Disclosure — the one honest weak point. Strong foundation (audited Zcash cryptography), no independent audit of the app itself yet. Same gap as Wire, Threema, Jami, and Status. Only SimpleX clears this bar in the group.

## ❓ 5\. How does Z-TEXT compare across the full field?

• **Briar** — no server at all, even offline. Strongest possible architecture, but no wallet, no audit, mesh mode leaks IP

• **SimpleX** — zero identifiers, independently audited (Trail of Bits, 2022). Tor is opt-in like Z-TEXT, IP visible if left off

• **Threema** — anonymous only if paid in cash. Most users provide phone or email, breaking that claim in practice

• **Wire** — enterprise-focused, centralized servers, recommended by privacy researchers for business use, not privacy maximalists

• **Status** — wallet + messenger like Z-TEXT, decentralized P2P routing, but no confirmed Tor or post-quantum, no independent audit

• **Jami** — fully peer-to-peer, no servers, but depends on bootstrap servers for reliability and was dropped from Privacy Guides for lacking an audit

Z-TEXT ties for last place on one category, alongside Briar, Threema, Wire, Status, and Jami:

• Data Disclosure (no independent audit)

Only SimpleX has an independent audit (Trail of Bits, 2022) — the sole app in the group of 7 with one. Briar appears in both lists: strongest network architecture, but no formal third-party audit either.

## ❓ 6\. What's the on-chain permanence trade-off?

Default: messages are local-only, not written to the blockchain. Toggle on, and a message becomes permanent — recoverable forever from your seed, even after a full wipe.

That permanence is timestamped on a public ledger. But zk-SNARKs shield the content and the parties — what's visible is a shielded transaction, not who or what. Permanence and privacy aren't in conflict here; the proof system is built specifically to make them coexist.

**Mini-resume:** On-chain mode is opt-in. It trades nothing away — zk-SNARKs shield the transaction whether it's permanent or not. The Eternal Memory feature is a genuine advantage no ephemeral messenger can match.
