You dropped your phone in the sea. Ten years of messages went with it.

Postcard #5 just arrived from 2035\. A joke on the front, a real fact on the back.

This one is about the day your phone dies. Z-TEXT is a privacy messenger built on the BitcoinZ blockchain. No phone number, no email, no SIM. Z-TEXT messages don't live on your phone. They live on the blockchain. So when the phone is gone, 24 words bring them back.

In short

In a survey of 2,213 Americans, 31% said they broke a phone and lost all the data on it. Most messengers keep your history on the phone, or in a backup you have to set up. Z-TEXT writes each message to the BitcoinZ blockchain as a shielded transaction. Type your 24-word seed on any new device, and Z-TEXT rebuilds your wallet and your message history from the chain. Lose the 24 words, and nobody can recover them. Not even us.

## ❓ 1\. What does postcard #5 say?

"Dear 2026, you dropped your phone in the sea. Ten years of messages went with it."

The punchline on the card: **"Ours came back with 24 words."** Signed, a survivor from 2035.

Cards #1 to #4 were about who can read you, see you, or find you. This one is about the other half of the Z-TEXT promise: [Shielded Permanence™](https://z-text.org/shielded-permanence/). Nobody can read your messages. And nobody can erase them, not even a wave.

The year 2035 is invented. The fact on the back is real.

Mini-resume

Postcard From 2035 #5 shows a phone lost at sea with ten years of messages, and a Z-TEXT user who gets everything back with 24 words. It illustrates Shielded Permanence™: Z-TEXT messages are unreadable to anyone but the recipient, and permanent on the BitcoinZ blockchain.

## ❓ 2\. How often does a phone take your messages with it?

More often than you'd think. Secure Data Recovery surveyed 2,213 Americans from August 31 to September 9, 2022\. (Source: [Secure Data Recovery](https://www.securedatarecovery.com/blog/states-break-phones-most?ref=z-text.org))

76%

had to replace a phone because they broke it.

31%

broke a phone and completely lost the data it contained.

23%

dropped their phone in the toilet.

Nearly one in three. That's not bad luck. That's a design problem.

Mini-resume

A 2022 Secure Data Recovery survey of 2,213 Americans found that 76% had replaced a phone after breaking it, 31% had broken a phone and lost all its data, and 23% had dropped a phone in the toilet.

## ❓ 3\. Why do most messengers lose your messages with the phone?

Because most messengers store your history on the phone itself. When the phone dies, the history dies with it, unless you set up a backup in advance.

Signal is honest about this. Signal's own blog says that in the past, a broken or lost phone meant your message history was gone. In September 2025, Signal started rolling out secure backups: opt-in, end-to-end encrypted, and unlocked by a 64-character recovery key. Lose that key, and Signal can't help you. (Source: [Signal blog](https://signal.org/blog/introducing-secure-backups/?ref=z-text.org))

Without a backup, Signal's device transfer needs the old phone in your hand, with a working camera. (Source: [Signal Support](https://support.signal.org/hc/en-us/articles/10045771316762-iOS-to-iOS-Device-Transfer?ref=z-text.org))

WhatsApp takes another route: its backups sit on Google Drive or iCloud, third-party clouds run by Google and Apple. (Source: [PhoneArena](https://www.phonearena.com/news/this-beloved-messaging-app-is-finally-getting-one-highly-requested-feature-but-with-a-catch%5Fid173849?ref=z-text.org))

To be fair, that's a real step forward for Signal. But a backup is something you have to remember to switch on. Z-TEXT doesn't need one. The blockchain is the archive.

Mini-resume

Most messaging apps store message history on the phone. Signal added opt-in encrypted backups in September 2025, unlocked by a 64-character recovery key; without one, a lost Signal phone meant lost history. WhatsApp backups are stored on Google Drive or iCloud. Z-TEXT needs no separate backup, because Z-TEXT messages are stored on the BitcoinZ blockchain.

## ❓ 4\. What is a 24-word seed?

A seed phrase is a list of ordinary words that stands in for a private key. Words are easier to write down than a long string of numbers. Crypto wallets use seeds of 12 to 24 words, and if a wallet is lost or damaged, the seed restores it. (Source: [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cryptocurrency%5Fwallet?ref=z-text.org))

In Z-TEXT, your 24-word seed is your identity. No phone number, no email, no account. Z-TEXT creates the 24 words on your device the first time you open the app. Those 24 words are your wallet, and the only way to recover it. (Source: [Z-TEXT docs](https://z-text.com/docs/backup-recovery?ref=z-text.org))

Write them on paper, in order. Not in a photo, not in an email, not in a cloud note. Prefer a file? Z-TEXT can also export an encrypted backup file, sealed with its own passphrase. Both protect the same seed.

Mini-resume

A seed phrase is a list of 12 to 24 words that stands in for a private key and restores a crypto wallet. In Z-TEXT, a 24-word seed generated on the device is the user's identity and the only way to recover the wallet. Z-TEXT users can store it on paper or as an encrypted backup file.

## ❓ 5\. How does Z-TEXT bring your messages back?

Z-TEXT sends every message as a shielded transaction on the BitcoinZ blockchain. Shielded means zk-SNARKs zero-knowledge proofs hide the sender, the receiver and the amount on the chain. The message itself travels encrypted inside the transaction. Only the recipient can read it.

And the blockchain doesn't forget. BitcoinZ has run since September 2017\. (Source: [BitcoinZ](https://getbtcz.com/?ref=z-text.org))

So getting your messages back takes three steps:

1. Install Z-TEXT on any new device.
2. On the welcome screen, tap **"I have a recovery key"**.
3. Type your 24 words in order. Z-TEXT re-scans the chain and rebuilds your wallet, with your balance and message history.

No old phone needed. No cloud account. No support ticket. (Source: [Z-TEXT docs](https://z-text.com/docs/backup-recovery?ref=z-text.org))

Lose the phone. Keep the conversation.

Mini-resume

Z-TEXT sends each message as a shielded transaction on the BitcoinZ blockchain, running since September 2017\. To recover on a new device, a Z-TEXT user taps "I have a recovery key" and types the 24-word seed. Z-TEXT re-scans the blockchain and restores the wallet balance and message history. The old phone is not needed.

## ❓ 6\. What comes back, and what doesn't?

✅ Always comes back

- Messages you received
- Your contacts
- Your BTCZ wallet and balance
- Your saved passwords

⚙️ Comes back if you turned it on

- Messages you sent. It's a toggle, like Tor: "keep sent messages on-chain".
- Toggle on: a copy of each sent message goes on-chain, and the 24 words bring it back.
- Toggle off: your sent messages were never on the chain, so they can't come back.
- The cost: a one-way message sends 0.00021 BTCZ instead of 0.00011 BTCZ, because a copy goes back to you.

Our advice? If your history matters to you, turn it on. It's a fraction of a fraction of a coin.

One more thing. Z-TEXT messages are text and stickers. No photos, no voice. So there's no photo album to restore.

Mini-resume

With the 24-word seed, Z-TEXT always restores received messages, contacts, the BTCZ wallet and saved passwords. Sent messages come back only if the "keep sent messages on-chain" toggle was on; with it, a one-way message sends 0.00021 BTCZ instead of 0.00011 BTCZ. Z-TEXT messages are text and stickers only.

## ❓ 7\. What are the honest limits?

- **Lose the 24 words, lose everything.** Nobody can recover them. Not even us.
- **Anyone with your 24 words can read your messages and spend your funds.** Never share them. No one from Z-TEXT will ever ask for them.
- **Restoring takes a moment.** Z-TEXT re-scans the chain to rebuild your history.
- **The Z-TEXT app hasn't been independently audited yet.** A public bug bounty is open.

Yes, we're listing our own weak spots in a post that sells our app. That's the deal: math you can check, not promises you have to trust.

Mini-resume

If a Z-TEXT user loses the 24-word seed, nobody can recover it, including Z-TEXT. Anyone holding the seed can read the user's messages and spend the funds. Restoring requires a blockchain re-scan. The Z-TEXT app is not yet independently audited; a public bug bounty is open.
