Weibo is China's largest microblogging platform, often called "China's Twitter." It has over 500 million users and is one of the most important arenas for Chinese public opinion — and simultaneously one of the CCP's most important tools for surveillance and censorship.

Weibo is not a private communication tool — it is a public social media platform. But its danger lies in this: many overseas Chinese use it to stay connected with family, share daily life, even discuss politics. They do not know that this content is being systematically monitored, analysed, and when necessary, deleted or used against them.

Weibo is the public face of CCP surveillance. It looks like Twitter, but its owner is different.

In 2022, Weibo introduced mandatory location disclosure (MLD) — initially justified as a way to "geo-tag Ukraine War posts," but quickly expanded to cover all posts and comments on the platform.

This means: wherever you post from, your province or country is automatically displayed next to your post. You cannot turn this off. You cannot hide your location.

Research data shows this feature has a clear political targeting dimension — users supporting Ukraine and liberal-leaning users are geo-tagged far more frequently than conservative users. This is not privacy protection. This is precisely targeted political surveillance.

If you are overseas, your location data becomes a bridge of risk connecting you to family members inside China.

In 2012, Sina Weibo launched its Real-Name Registration (RNR) system. This means every post, every comment on Weibo is linked to your real identity — even if you use a nickname, Sina and the government know exactly who you are.

Overseas Chinese often believe that using Weibo from abroad avoids political risk. The reality: Chinese tech companies — including Weibo — fall under Chinese law, requiring them to provide data access to authorities without a warrant when requested.

One post criticising a local official, one share about human rights, one sensitive photo — enough to get your account suspended or cause problems when you return to China.
