❓ What exactly is metadata?
Metadata is not the content of your message. Metadata is everything around it. It is the envelope, not the letter. It is the oil stain, not the engine.
When you send a message on Signal, Telegram, or WhatsApp, the app records — or allows to be recorded — a set of data points that have nothing to do with what you wrote. Those data points are metadata. And metadata is often more revealing than the message itself.

❓ Does Signal protect your metadata?

❓ What about Telegram and WhatsApp?

WhatsApp encrypts message content. WhatsApp is owned by Meta. Meta has built its entire business model on metadata collection. WhatsApp collects who you talk to, how often, from which device, at what time, and from which location. That metadata feeds advertising profiles and has been shared with law enforcement in multiple countries.
Privacy International has documented extensively how metadata collected by messaging platforms has been used to identify, track, and prosecute journalists, activists, and political dissidents worldwide. The message was encrypted. The metadata was not. The metadata was enough.
❓ How does Z-TEXT produce zero metadata?
