Best Privacy Blockchain Messenger 2026: An Honest Comparison
All four skip your phone number. But where do your messages live, who can see your metadata, and what are the real limits? Z-TEXT, Session, BChat and extrasafe.chat compared honestly, with Z-TEXT's weak points included.

Z-TEXT, Session, BChat and extrasafe.chat, compared on phone numbers, metadata, storage and honest limits. Written by the Z-TEXT team, with Z-TEXT's weak points included.
People now search for the "best privacy blockchain messenger" because the usual apps keep leaking identities. Z-TEXT is a private messenger on the BitcoinZ blockchain with no phone number, no email and no SIM. We built Z-TEXT, so yes, we're biased. That's exactly why this comparison shows where the others win.
Mini-resume
Z-TEXT, Session, BChat and extrasafe.chat all let you sign up without a phone number or email. They differ in how they hide metadata, where messages are stored and for how long, and what they offer beyond chat. Z-TEXT keeps messages permanently on the BitcoinZ blockchain with zk-SNARKs and bundles five tools; Session is free, audited, and deletes messages after two weeks by default; BChat ties into the Beldex wallet; extrasafe.chat focuses on peer-to-peer chats and calls. None of the four documents forward secrecy today.
❓ 1. What is a blockchain messenger, and why is it a must-have?
A blockchain messenger is a chat app that uses a decentralized network instead of one company's servers. But the word gets stretched. Some apps only route messages through community nodes. Others, like Z-TEXT, write the encrypted message itself onto a blockchain.
Why does it matter? Three reasons.
No identity to steal. Your account is a cryptographic key, not a phone number or email. In 2026, most big hacks stole exactly those: SMS codes, emails, phone numbers and ID documents. We explain this in It's the ID, Stupid.
No single company in the middle. Z-TEXT does not rely on a single company-owned message server for its blockchain message layer. No single company can quietly read, sell or switch off your conversations.
You own your history. With Z-TEXT, your 24-word seed phrase brings back your messages on any device. Lose your phone, keep your words.
Age matters, like a good wine. A blockchain earns trust over time. Every year it keeps running, block after block, is one more year of real-world testing. So how old is the network under each app?
To be fair, age is not a guarantee. Old networks still need upgrades and fixes. But nine years of blocks is a track record no newcomer can buy.
Mini-resume
A blockchain messenger replaces a company's servers with a decentralized network. Its main benefits are an identity that is a key rather than a phone number, no single company controlling the messages, a history you can recover anywhere with a 24-word seed in Z-TEXT's case, and a network track record. BitcoinZ, under Z-TEXT, dates from September 10, 2017, Beldex from June 2019, and the current Session Network from May 2025.
❓ 2. Which ones need no phone number?
All four. That's the good news.
Why it matters: a phone number is the weakest link of online identity. It can be SIM-swapped, phished through SMS codes and leaked in database breaches. It's the ID, stupid.
Mini-resume
Z-TEXT, Session, BChat and extrasafe.chat all work without a phone number or email. Z-TEXT uses a 24-word seed, Session a random 66-character ID, BChat an ID plus a Beldex wallet and seed, and extrasafe.chat a device key plus a random 9-digit number.
❓ 3. How does each one achieve privacy?
Privacy has two layers. The content: can anyone read the message? And the metadata: can anyone see who talks to whom, and from where?
Z-TEXT sends each message as a shielded BitcoinZ transaction. zk-SNARKs, zero-knowledge proofs that prove a transaction is valid without revealing it, hide the sender, the recipient and the content on-chain. Messages are also encrypted with AES-256-GCM, and key exchange is hybrid: classical X25519 combined with ML-KEM-768, a post-quantum algorithm, live since the 3.7.0 beta. Signatures still use classical Ed25519, so Z-TEXT is quantum-resistant, not quantum-proof.
For the network layer, Z-TEXT has Tor built in. Tor is the largest and most studied onion network. Z-TEXT's Tor mode is fail-closed: if Tor drops, Z-TEXT stops rather than leaking your IP. But here's the honest part: Tor is off until you switch it on, in Settings, then Network.
Session uses onion routing through its own node network, on by default. Each message passes through several encrypted layers, each peeled by a different server (Session docs). Its privacy policy says it keeps no IP logs.
BChat routes messages through several of Beldex's 2,000+ masternodes to make message paths harder to follow. Public technical detail is limited.
extrasafe.chat encrypts messages, files and contacts with AES-256-GCM and sends them peer-to-peer. Calls use WebRTC with SRTP and DTLS encryption.
So who hides your IP best? Out of the box, Session, because its onion routing is on by default. With Tor switched on, Z-TEXT stacks two layers: Tor hides who you are on the network, and zk-SNARKs hide who talks to whom on the blockchain. Defaults matter. You should know which one you're running.
Mini-resume
Z-TEXT hides sender, recipient and content on-chain with zk-SNARKs, adds AES-256-GCM and ML-KEM-768, and offers optional fail-closed Tor for the IP layer. Session hides IP addresses by default with onion routing. BChat routes through Beldex masternodes. extrasafe.chat uses AES-256-GCM peer-to-peer. Out of the box Session protects IPs best; with Tor on, Z-TEXT combines two layers.
❓ 4. Where are your messages stored, and does erasing mean security?
This is where the four apps split into two philosophies.
Most privacy apps now push disappearing messages. Z-TEXT takes the opposite view. If an app must delete your words to protect them, it's admitting it couldn't protect them. Disappearing is surrender.
Z-TEXT keeps your history and keeps it private. We call it Shielded Permanence™: private first, then eternal. An elephant never forgets. Z-TEXT never tells.
But fair is fair. Disappearing chats do limit the damage if someone seizes your unlocked phone. And with Z-TEXT, if your 24 words are ever stolen, the thief can read your whole history. It's a real trade-off, and you should choose it on purpose.
Mini-resume
Z-TEXT stores messages permanently on the BitcoinZ blockchain, shielded by zk-SNARKs. Session deletes messages from its nodes after two weeks by default, extrasafe.chat clears chats with timers, and BChat does not state its storage publicly. Z-TEXT argues that deletion is not security; disappearing chats still limit damage if a phone is seized.
❓ 5. What do you get beyond messaging?
Here the four apps look very different.
BChat links to a Beldex wallet with the same seed phrase. Session and extrasafe.chat focus on chats and calls.
Mini-resume
Z-TEXT combines five tools under one 24-word seed: a shielded messenger, a BTCZ wallet with T and Z addresses, a password manager with 2FA codes, on-chain Channels and disposable identities, plus panic and stealth modes. BChat links to a Beldex wallet. Session and extrasafe.chat focus on chats and calls.
❓ 6. What are the honest limits of each?
Every app has them. Here they are, ours first.
Session's one big advantage on paper: an independent security review by Quarkslab in 2021 verified its core encryption and network claims. Z-TEXT doesn't have that yet. We'd rather say it than hide it.
Mini-resume
Z-TEXT's limits are paid messaging, no independent audit yet (a ZEC bug bounty instead), no forward secrecy and Tor off by default. Session lacks forward secrecy and 2FA and faced a funding crisis in 2026, but was audited by Quarkslab in 2021. BChat and extrasafe.chat publish little technical detail and cite no audits.
❓ 7. Which one should you choose?
There's no single winner. It depends on what you need.
Still not sure? Try our messenger privacy picker. And if you pick Z-TEXT, turn on Tor in Settings on day one.
Mini-resume
Choose Z-TEXT for permanent private history with a built-in wallet and extra tools, Session for free, audited, disappearing messages, BChat if you already use Beldex, and extrasafe.chat for simple peer-to-peer chats and calls.
All four skip your phone number.
Z-TEXT keeps your messages on-chain, for good.
No phone. No email. No SIM. Zero metadata. Z-TEXT zk-SNARKs privacy.
