Postcard From 2035 #2: No One Asks for Your Phone Number
A postcard from 2035: you gave your phone number to every app, then 533 million of them leaked. Why a leaked number follows you for years, and how Z-TEXT works with no phone, no email and no SIM.

Postcard #2 just arrived from 2035. Again a joke on the front, and a real fact on the back.
Z-TEXT is a privacy messenger built on the BitcoinZ blockchain. Z-TEXT needs no phone number, no email and no SIM.
In short
In April 2021, the phone numbers of 533 million Facebook users from 106 countries were posted on a hacking forum. A leaked phone number is hard to change, and it links your name, your accounts and your login codes. Z-TEXT replaces the phone number with a 24-word seed phrase: no phone, no email, no SIM.
❓ 1. What does postcard #2 say?
"Dear 2026, you gave your phone number to every app. Then 533 million of them leaked. In 2035, nobody asks for one. Our ID is 24 words."
The year 2035 is invented. The leak is real.
❓ 2. What was the leak?
In April 2021, the phone numbers and profile details of 533 million Facebook users were posted on a hacking forum. The data covered 106 countries, including about 32 million users in the US and 11 million in the UK. (Source: The Record)
Attackers had collected the data in 2019, through a bug in Facebook's contact-import feature. They fed in phone numbers and got back the matching profiles. Facebook fixed the bug in August 2019. (Source: The Hacker News)
And Facebook said it had no plans to notify the users one by one. (Source: NPR)
Mini-resume
In April 2021, the phone numbers of 533 million Facebook users in 106 countries appeared on a hacking forum. Attackers had scraped them in 2019 through a bug in Facebook's contact-import feature, fixed in August 2019. Facebook did not notify users individually.
❓ 3. Why does a leaked phone number matter?
You can change a password in one minute. Changing your phone number is a lot harder.
That one number links your name, your accounts and the login codes many sites send by text message. A security expert quoted by NPR called it a "universal identifier." (Source: NPR)
So a leak doesn't end. It follows you.
Our view: a phone number was never a good ID. It was just the easiest one for apps to collect.
Mini-resume
A leaked phone number is hard to change. The same number links a person's name, accounts and text-message login codes, which is why security experts call it a universal identifier. A phone-number leak keeps exposing people for years.
❓ 4. How does Z-TEXT work without a phone number?
In Z-TEXT, your identity is 24 words, called a seed phrase. A seed phrase is a list of words that creates your keys on your own device.
Z-TEXT asks for no phone, no email and no SIM. So there is no phone number to leak from Z-TEXT in the first place.
Z-TEXT also lets you create separate disposable identities. Each Z-TEXT identity is its own 24-word seed.
Yes, we sell a messenger, so of course we'd say this. But you can check it yourself: the Z-TEXT setup screen never asks for a number.
Mini-resume
Z-TEXT replaces the phone number with a 24-word seed phrase created on the user's device. Z-TEXT asks for no phone number, no email and no SIM, and each disposable Z-TEXT identity has its own seed.
Honest note: the Z-TEXT app has not been independently audited yet. A public bug bounty is open.
This is card #2 of the series Postcard from 2035. Card #1 was about quantum computers: Postcard From 2035: Your Chats Got Opened. Ours Are OK.
Z-TEXT runs on Android, macOS, Windows and Linux: z-text.com/downloads. BitcoinZ lives at getbtcz.com.
