The Best Signal Alternative With No Phone Number (2026)

Signal is the gold standard, but it still starts with your phone number. Its new no-number beta changes that, for some. Here's how it compares with Z-TEXT, and the honest limits of both.

Signal is the gold standard of private messaging. But for most people, Signal still starts with one thing: your phone number.

Z-TEXT is a private messenger built on the BitcoinZ blockchain. No phone number, no email, no SIM. Your identity is 24 words created on your own device. This guide compares the two honestly, including Signal's new sign-up without a phone number.

In short

Standard Signal registration still uses a phone number. In September 2026, Signal opened a paid no-number beta on Android, but existing accounts can't drop their number. A phone number links an account to a real identity and makes SIM swap hijacks possible. Z-TEXT never asks for a number: a Z-TEXT identity is a 24-word seed, and messages travel as shielded transactions on the BitcoinZ blockchain. Z-TEXT has honest limits too: no independent audit yet, and a lost seed can't be recovered.

❓ 1. Does Signal still need a phone number in 2026?

By default, yes. Signal's standard sign-up asks for a phone number and confirms it with an SMS code.

But that's changing. In September 2026, Signal opened registration without a phone number in its Android 8.28 beta. It costs a one-time $2.99, to keep spammers out. You get an Account ID and an Account Key instead of a number. (Source: Privacy Guides)

That's a real step forward. But it's beta and Android only for now. Payment goes through Google Play Services. And existing Signal accounts can't remove their number.

Standard Signal registration in 2026 still uses a phone number. Signal's Android 8.28 beta, launched in September 2026, offers optional phone-number-free registration for a one-time $2.99, with an Account ID and Account Key. Existing Signal accounts cannot remove their phone number.

❓ 2. Why does a phone number matter so much?

A phone number is not just a contact detail. In many countries, a SIM card is registered to a real name. So a phone number links your messenger account to your identity.

It's also a door for attackers. In a SIM swap, a criminal convinces your carrier to move your number to their SIM card. Then your login codes arrive on their phone. In 2025, the FBI logged 971 SIM swap complaints and $17.4 million in losses. (Source: DeepStrike, citing the FBI IC3 2025 report)

We covered how a six-digit code hijacks messenger accounts in Postcard From 2035 #6.

A phone number ties a messenger account to a real-world identity and exposes it to SIM swap attacks. The FBI recorded 971 SIM swap complaints and $17.4 million in US losses in 2025.

❓ 3. What can Signal actually hand over?

Very little, and credit where it's due. Signal publishes the government requests it receives. Signal says the only data it can produce is the date and time an account registered, and the last date it connected. No messages, no contacts, no group lists. (Source: Signal, Government Requests)

But notice what those requests start with: an account, tied to a phone number. Signal protects what you say very well. The number still says who you are.

Mini-resume

According to Signal's published government requests, Signal can only produce an account's registration date and time and its last connection date. Signal does not hold messages, contacts or group information, but standard Signal accounts are still linked to a phone number.

❓ 4. What about Telegram and WhatsApp?

Both start with a phone number too.

Telegram does not turn on end-to-end encryption by default. Only "secret chats" are end-to-end encrypted, and you have to start them yourself. (Source: Privacy International)

WhatsApp encrypts messages end to end, but you register with your phone number, confirmed by a 6-digit code by SMS or call. (Source: WhatsApp Help)

Telegram and WhatsApp both register users with a phone number. Telegram does not enable end-to-end encryption by default: only secret chats are end-to-end encrypted. WhatsApp encrypts messages end to end, with registration confirmed by a 6-digit code sent by SMS or phone call.

❓ 5. What is Z-TEXT?

Z-TEXT is a private messenger built on the BitcoinZ blockchain, running since September 2017. Z-TEXT launched publicly on 5 October 2026, on Android, macOS, Windows and Linux. iOS is coming to the App Store.

Z-TEXT is five tools in one app, all unlocked by one 24-word seed:

💬 Messenger. Text and stickers, sent as shielded transactions.

🪙 Wallet. BTCZ with transparent and shielded addresses. The wallet is free.

🔑 Password manager. On-chain, restored with your seed. It can also show 2FA codes for other sites.

📣 Channels. Broadcast to an audience on-chain.

🎭 Disposable identities. A separate identity, with its own seed, when you need one.

How the privacy works: zk-SNARKs are zero-knowledge proofs, a way to prove a transaction is valid without revealing who sent it, who received it, or the amount. The message itself is encrypted with AES-256-GCM. For the key exchange, Z-TEXT uses a hybrid of ML-KEM-768 and X25519, a design meant to be quantum-resistant. Z-TEXT uses zk-SNARKs zero-knowledge proofs, AES-256-GCM encryption and a hybrid ML-KEM-768 and X25519 key exchange.

❓ 6. Z-TEXT vs Signal's no-number beta: what's the difference?

Both now let you skip the phone number. Here's how they differ.

Your identity

Signal beta: an Account ID and an Account Key.

Z-TEXT: a 24-word seed, created on your device.

Who can use it

Signal beta: new accounts, Android beta only, payment through Google Play Services.

Z-TEXT: every account, on Android, macOS, Windows and Linux.

Where messages live

Signal: on your devices, plus an optional encrypted backup.

Z-TEXT: on the BitcoinZ blockchain, as shielded transactions. Your 24 words bring them back on a new device.

If you lose your key

Signal beta: no recovery. A lost Account ID or Account Key means a lost account.

Z-TEXT: the same. A lost seed can't be recovered, not even by us.

Cost

Signal beta: one-time $2.99, then free.

Z-TEXT: the wallet is free; messaging needs a license code. Each message costs at most 0.0002 BTCZ, and most of it goes to the recipient and comes back when they reply.

In our view, the biggest difference isn't the number. It's where your history lives. Signal keeps it on your phone. Z-TEXT keeps it on the chain, shielded.

Mini-resume

Signal's no-number beta uses an Account ID and Account Key, is limited to new Android accounts, and costs a one-time $2.99. Z-TEXT uses a 24-word seed for every account on Android, macOS, Windows and Linux. Signal stores message history on devices with an optional backup; Z-TEXT stores messages as shielded transactions on the BitcoinZ blockchain. In both, a lost key cannot be recovered.

❓ 7. Are there other messengers with no phone number?

Yes, and you deserve to know them. Session, SimpleX Chat and Threema don't ask for personal information to sign up. (Source: Privacy Guides)

What makes Z-TEXT different from all of them is Shielded Permanence™: your messages are shielded by zk-SNARKs and kept on the BitcoinZ blockchain, with a wallet, password manager and Channels in the same app. We compare them one by one in Session vs Z-TEXT.

Mini-resume

Session, SimpleX Chat and Threema also let users sign up without personal information. Z-TEXT differs by storing shielded messages on the BitcoinZ blockchain and combining a messenger, wallet, password manager and Channels in one app.

❓ 8. What are Z-TEXT's honest limits?

No independent audit yet. The Z-TEXT app hasn't been independently audited. A public bug bounty is open.

Your 24 words are everything. Anyone holding them can read your messages and spend your funds. Lose them, and nobody can recover them.

Your network is visible unless you turn on Tor. Tor routing is built in, but it's a toggle you switch on. See Postcard From 2035 #4.

Text and stickers only. No calls, no photos, no voice notes.

No iPhone app yet. iOS is coming to the App Store.

Yes, we're listing our own weak spots in a post that sells our app. That's the deal: math you can check, not promises you have to trust.

Mini-resume

The Z-TEXT app is not yet independently audited; a public bug bounty is open. Anyone holding a user's 24-word seed can read the messages and spend the funds, and a lost seed cannot be recovered. Tor routing is built in as an optional toggle. Z-TEXT supports text and stickers only, and iOS is not yet available.

Z-TEXT runs on Android, macOS, Windows and Linux at z-text.com. BitcoinZ lives at getbtcz.com.
